Where Did I Go Wrong?

And I stared at myself in the mirror again
And the wind rolled in and my hair grew long
And my beard grew white, and I said...

Where did I go wrong?
I used to be surrounded by love
Now I'm surrounded by shit
(You saw me grow up)

And I rubbed all the thickening cream in my scalp
And I searched online for frustrated wives
With Sméagol's eyes, and I said...

Where did I go wrong?
I used to be surrounded by love
Now I'm surrounded by shit
(You saw me grow up)

Canada, you saw me grow up...

The Sentinels: Memoirs Of A Cunt (as Memoirs Of A Cunt)

Quotes:
Dan: Originally entitled Memoirs of a Cunt, I changed the title at the last minute, worried that the impact of the title might make it seems too much like a joke and take away the impact and subtlety of the song. To say I'm pleased with this is an understatement. Yes it's weird and a bit abrasive at the start, but it builds up layers of simultaneous different meanings in a way I've not got close to before - the chorus is an attempt to capture the feeling of someone staring into a mirror at his failed, sordid life, while ghosts of childhood and lost love dance around him. An amazing moment was when my 7 yr old Danish nephew Stefan was singing over it, delighted and surprised by the sound of his voice going through echo. I was recording it just for fun, but at the end it's completely captured the purity of childhood wonder - someone hearing echo for the first time in his life, laughing and reacting to it, and at the same time it was performed on top of the song so it's all in time. A lucky miracle, that one.
