Moth To A Flame

I was too shy to tell you
Just how I felt about you
Kind of hoping my anxiety
Would turn to E.S.P.
And you would notice

And as we got together
Underneath your umbrella
You turned and said it was good to have me
As a friend
As a friend
As a friend

Friends, yeah, is nothing
But a gentle euphemism
In the language of convenience
It means, 'no, thankyou'
But somewhere in the surety
There could be ambiguity
So here I am in limbo
Saying I, still want you and...

Like a helpless moth to a flame
I'll burn myself on your brightness, yeah
Your brightness, your brightness shines on

I was too shocked to argue
Heard myself saying 'thankyou'
Then you went on at length about blokes from your past
But now us with no complication

I bit my lip and listened
Gave up my pointless mission
And when we parted you gave me a hug
Like a friend
Like a friend
Like a friend
(God help me)

Friends, yeah, is nothing
But a gentle euphemism
In the language of convenience
It means, 'no, thankyou'
But somewhere in the surety
There could be ambiguity
So here I am in limbo
Saying I, still want you and...

Like a helpless moth to a flame
I'll burn myself on your brightness, yeah
Your brightness, your brightness shines on

Quotes:
Andy: A couple of years ago, I developed a crush on a girl I knew in Bradford. Annoyingly, the more we got to know each other, the more we entered the so called 'friends-zone'. It took me a while to realise that this and the 'just good friends' line was of course, bollocks! She just wasn't romantically into me! Her celebration of our uncomplicated friendship was a gentle way of making this clear... or was it? Like a helpless moth fluttering around a candle flame, burning myself on her metaphorical brightness, it was agony to hear her going on about her old boyfriends, new boyfriends etc. I suspect that she knew full well how I felt and secretly buzzed off it, 'cos she did just enough to keep me hanging on...
